MORE CHINESE PARENTS PREFER GIRLS THAN BOYS
Written @ 10:49 PM

SUMMARY:

Parents in China now prefer daughters to sons. In China, it is a tradition to have the only offspring they can have a male due to the one-child policy in that country. But it is also a tradition for parents to buy an apartment for their son when he gets married and to pay for the wedding.

Due to the rising prices of apartment in places like Beijing, parents choose to have a daughter because they cannot afford an apartment for their son. This is a total opposite in the United States where the females are the ones who pay for the wedding.

Besides that, it was believed that sons are the ones who will take over the farms and care for the parents but this is not always true. Girls are scoring better than boys in school, and this brings the parents of China to the question if the girls are after all capable to take care of the parents and take over the family business? Eventhough men earn higher than the women in China and in most countries, but it is often seen that the women are the ones taking care of the house and parents.

MY OPINION ON THE ARTICLE:

I just cannot help it to say GIRL POWER!!! I am glad that in China, couples are starting to realise that daughters do have the same potential and capabilities as sons. Frankly, I do not support the tradition in China that says to have a son is better than to have a daughter. Because now girls are getting more clever in school, and gender equality says it all. And the capability of one to take over the family business and care for the parents is not determine by the gender. Everyone is born with one head and two brains, so it does not make any logic to say that boys are better  or more special in any way than girls in terms of taking care of the welfare of the family.

Eventhough men do earn more than women now, it does not mean that men are more capable to care for the family because money does not measure capability. But, of course, tradition and culture will always stay and not fade by time but trend can.

I hope that people worldwide will have a change of mind about having girls, as in daughters, because sons and daughters have the same will and capability to run the family business and care for the older parents. On top of that, I hope that parents in China will have daughters, not because raising sons are more expensive, but because girls can still make a difference.
